The Village of Assoun

Miniyeh-Danniyeh District, North Lebanon

A Village Steeped in History

Assoun is one of the largest villages in the Danniyeh District, situated north of Lebanon. It offers some of the most breathtaking scenery in the area and is renowned for its wealth in water ground wells, fruits, and vegetables.

Assoun is one of the most important summer destinations — a getaway to relax for many people, owing also to its healthy dry weather. At an altitude of 950 metres above sea level, the village enjoys a crisp mountain climate that has attracted visitors for generations.

The name Assoun is believed to originate from the Hebrew name 'asum', meaning 'strong and stubborn' — a fitting description for a community whose faith and heritage have endured through centuries of hardship.

Heritage

A Community Shaped by History

The civil war in 1975 took a heavy toll on the Christian community in Assoun, forcing the majority to flee the village and Lebanon altogether in the search for a better life. Today, over 90% of the Assoun Christian community — spanning three generations — live in Australia, yet they still maintain strong ties with their home town.

Despite the diaspora, the bond to Assoun remains unbroken. Families separated by oceans continue to return each summer, to attend the feast of Saint Mary's Church, and to pass on their heritage to children born far from the mountains of northern Lebanon.

Villages bordering Assoun are: Sir, Baqsaifrin, Al Qattan, Hakl Al Azime, Karam Al Muhr, Izal and Bahoun.
